What it’s Like in Year 7

When your child joins The Dukeries Academy in year 7, they will study a broad range of subjects, including: English, Mathematics Science, ICT, Physical Education, Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship, Geography, History, Religious Education, Technology, Drama, Art, Music, French or German.

These subjects are studied from year 7 until year 9. In most subjects, students are taught in ability groupings. The students are assessed at five points throughout the year, and the results are shared with parents so that you are always fully informed of your child’s progress, and what support they may require to achieve their potential.

Practical Considerations

Getting to School

School buses run from Kneesall, Old Clipstone, Kirton, Edwinstowe, Newark, Mansfield, Eakring, Walesby and Bilsthorpe. To find out whether your child is entitled to free transport, please contact Nottinghamshire County Council. The school also provides drop-off points and bicycle parking.

After School Activities

The Dukeries Academy provides over 100 activities per week, with free after school provision for students in years 7 and 8.

All students in years 7 to 11 are required to wear school uniform. Your child’s shoes, hairstyle, plus any makeup and jewellery must also comply with the regulations.

Onwards & Upwards

From year 10, students study a core range of subjects; English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Religious Education, ICT, Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.

We will then work with you and your child to select additional subjects. Subjects available are either within the English Baccalaureate, or are Vocational Qualifications.

In this way, students are able to tailor their studies based on their abilities and aspirations.

Our aim is for our students to gain the qualifications and skills necessary to follow the career of their choice.

The additional subjects available include (English Baccalaureate) History, Geography, French, German, Art. Drama, Music, Food and Physical Education, Product Design, Textiles (Vocational Qualifications) Fashion, Health and Social Care, Construction, Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Engineering and Sports Studies.

Although academic achievement is at the core of what we do, we believe that school should be about more than just passing exams.

Beyond School

We’re incredibly proud of our students. Their hard work here at The Dukeries Academy prepares them for a broad range of careers.

Our innovative methods equip students for employment to ensure that your child is ready for whatever opportunities life sends their way. This includes training in new and emerging technologies.

On leaving The Dukeries Academy, some of our students go directly into work, while others continue their education at University, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Here’s What Our Past Students Say:

“I graduated from the University of Birmingham, Class of 2014 with a BA (with Hons) in French and European Politics. I also spent one year studying at a University in France. I could not have got here without the constant support from the teachers at the Dukeries who always believed in me and pushed me to aim high…”
